Watch Metallica cover Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ at recent gig

Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett covered Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ over the weekend, during the band’s gig in Boston.

It’s common practice at Metallica shows for James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich to take a little breather while Trujillo and Hammett hold down the fort for a song and have a jam, usually playing a song with some significance to where they’re playing.

Metallica took the stage at Boston’s Gillette Stadium on Sunday night, and while it’s not the home stadium of the Red Sox, it was close enough. Anyone who knows the Red Sox, knows the Neil Diamond classic has been their staple song for over two decades, with fans singing along to the song in the middle of the eighth inning during the game.

Before launching into the performance, Trujillo joked, "This song is really scary, super heavy and if you start moshing try not to injure yourself, because it's such a scary song I'm already shaking.”

Trujillo and Hammett then launched into the song, performing a heavier version of the 1969 hit, and the crowd singing the ‘So good! So good! So good!’ parts right on cue.

The performance has had mixed reactions online, with a lot of fans not vibing the cover.

Personally, I reckon it’s a bit of fun and I enjoyed watching it - but hey, if you’re not into it, I ain’t gonna try yum your yuck.

Check out the performance up top.
